If you want to quit smoking, one of the first things that you need to know is to not allow yourself to become discouraged. You can talk yourself into being able to do anything, you just need to have a strong will and a lot of self control.
Many people are going around saying that in order to stop smoking cigarettes permanently, you need to use some nicotine replacement therapy or get on some FDA-approved drugs from your doctor and this is just not the case. Unfortunately, nicotine replacement therapies do not work for a large portion of the people who attempt to use them to quit smoking. They actually only work about 5% of the time and the other people who use them are left broke and disgusted. And for a good reason, because the nicotine is not the biggest factor in the addiction to tobacco cigarettes… not by far.
Of course, nicotine is addictive and going without after you have been using it for years can have physical consequences, but these consequences are short term at best. Withdrawal symptoms only last up to a couple of weeks at the most and after that, it’s all in your mind. Remember that thing about self control? Your mental and emotional addiction to smoking is a lot harder to break than your body’s physical addiction to the nicotine and that’s for sure. Your body will do whatever you train it to do in most cases.
Having a cigarette in your hand and drawing on it is just as much of an addiction as the nicotine ever was; it can be almost likened to a nervous habit, such as biting fingernails. Breaking the perceived need to do that is a difficult process that no nicotine replacement therapy or medication can address.
Start by removing cigarettes from your possession. You don’t have to stop smoking immediately or start weaning yourself off of them, but just stop carrying them around everywhere with you. Don’t carry them in your pocket or in your purse. It may drive you crazy for the first couple of days, but getting used to being without them on you is the first step towards quitting for good. When you break the mental habit, the physical one will be broken naturally.
After you get used to not carrying them, put the ashtrays away. Start making it more inconvenient to smoke little by little and eventually, you’ll find yourself thinking that it’s just not worth it to have to go to the other room to get a cigarette, your lighter, and your ashtray. The key to all of this is being consistent and sticking to your guns. If you can manage that, you’re homefree.
