There are numerous tasks in the world that many people would say are incredibly difficult due to the huge mental toll that they take, as opposed to physical. One of these tasks is quitting smoking. While most habits can simply be broken with a little bit of concentration and focus, it is much more difficult to break a nicotine addiction, and if the person who is trying to quit has been smoking for a very long time, then the odds of that person being able to quit are even lower than someone who has only been smoking for a little while. However, with the right support, a person trying to quit will find that their odds of success are much higher than without one.

If you are trying to quit, then having support from friends and family is one of the keys to success. You must be able to talk to your friends and family and let them know what your plan is. You should receive support already, but it may be difficult to receive support from family members who do not plan to quit smoking, as they may have more trouble relating to your goal. However, do not count these members out. Instead, politely ask them if they could not smoke around you.

Explain to them that is simply to keep you from being tempted to smoke again. They should understand, but be sure to remember to ask them to do so as politely as you can, and acknowledge that you are aware it could potentially be an inconvenience to them. This way you are telling them that you are also showing them the consideration that they are showing you. This same principle should apply to your friends.

Another reason that it is so important to have a good support group to help you as you try to quit smoking is because it gives you someone to talk to whenever you feel that your nicotine cravings are too strong. Whenever you talk to someone, you are doing two things at the same time. On one hand, you will be able to express your frustration to somebody in a constructive way. On the other hand, you will be taking the time that you would have spent smoking and will instead focus it on talking. It is important that the person you turn to for talking about your cravings is someone who has never smoked, or someone who has quit smoking and understands what you are going through.
