If you are looking to quit smoking, there are a number of methods available for you to use. Which one will work for you is a guessing game and many smokers try several methods without success. The key is figuring out what motivates you and what the reasons you want to quit are.

Quitting cold turkey is a method that has been tried and true for many people over the years, but it requires a lot of will power to make it through. Nicotine is physically addictive and the habit of having a cigarette in your hand is emotionally and psychologically addictive. Not many people realize it, but cigarettes are a crutch for them when they get into stressful or upsetting situations and are often the first thing that they reach for. Quitting cold turkey can be difficult for people who are constantly facing situations like these.

Pharmaceutical aids like nicotine gums, patches, and lozenges do not work most of the time. In fact, they only work for about 5% of the people who use them simply because they address the physical nicotine addiction, but do not address the mental addiction to the act of smoking. Because of this, most people who attempt to quit using this deceptively marketed method fail. The truth is, if you know someone who quit by using pharmaceutical aids, they probably could have quit on their own without buying a bunch of expensive drugs.

Another thing that doesn’t work and can actually be dangerous are prescription drugs that you can obtain from your doctor. Stop smoking prescription drugs are known for their side effects, including neuropsychiatric effects. Depression, difficulty concentrating, and suicidal tendencies are just a few of the symptoms that users have reported, especially those smokers who had a history of depression. Talk to your doctor and consider other options very carefully before resorting to this method.

The only real, legitimate way to quit smoking is to gradually reduce the amount that you smoke over a period of time. You can do this by limiting yourself to only a few cigarettes a day and decreasing that amount or by ceasing to smoke in areas of your home and in your vehicle and continuing to eliminate more areas as you go. You don’t have to spend a fortune to quit smoking; all you have to do is get yourself motivated and concentrate on just saying “no” to the craving, no matter what.
