It is no secret that almost anyone of any age can have an addiction to something. These days it is happening everywhere and they strike in some unlikely places. Everyday moms are seemingly fighting addictions that June Cleaver or Carol Brady would never have been guilty of having. Of course, that was television and real life is nothing like those television situation comedies where the mom always looked perfect and almost always had everything under control. Just recently there was a mom headed home with a car full of kids that wrecked and many were killed or seriously injured. Her other family and friends denied vehemently that she had a drinking problem even though her blood alcohol showed it was well above the legal limits at that early morning hour.
Moms who are immersed in alcohol, prescription drug and illegal drug abuses are much more widespread than formerly thought. The thing is that so many of them hide it so well. They can stay at home and bake a cake, pick the kids up from school, keep up with the laundry and do it all with a gin and tonic hidden in the cabinet. The dirty laundry bin is a perfect place to hide a bottle of vodka because usually no one except mom wants to go into that.
So, what is it that might be causing this sudden influx of housewives that are becoming addicted to these substances? Is it the overwhelming nature of dealing with kids and the house on a daily basis? Is it the monotony of doing the same things day after day? Is it the constant responsibility of having to be at the beck and call of others in the home day and night? Is it unfulfilled dreams that seem to be out of reach for them now? The reasons why anyone becomes addicted to substances lie in each individual person.
What is known is that when moms stay at home and have so many responsibilities to everyone else, sometimes they can begin to feel mechanical and unappreciated. This is one reason why it is so important for these moms to have some time to themselves. They have to learn to take care of themselves as much as they do everyone else so they do not get lost in the shuffle. Any mom that begins to feel she is overburdened with daily life and notices the blooming of an addiction to anything, whether it be alcohol, drugs or food, must get the help they need. They pride themselves so much on holding the family together, but when mom gets an addiction that it is out of control, it is the one thing that can surely tear the home apart.
Never think that these types of problems will eventually take care of themselves because that is not how they work. In most cases they will only escalate until something happens to bring them to the surface and leaves no alternative except to deal with them in some way.
