Liposuction (also referred to as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) is a surgery that is popular in America and throughout the world. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans undergo the surgery, and large numbers of procedures are performed in Europe, Asia and certain parts of South America, as well.
In America, the surgery enjoys a somewhat unique amount of popularity. Fer twelve out of the last thirteen years, suction lipectomy has topped the charts as the number one most popular cosmetic surgery in America. Last year, nearly 350,000 lipoplasties were performed in America. The year before, before the recession took a bite out of the cosmetic surgery industry, the number was about 80,000 higher. Just about the only cosmetic surgery which can compete with lipoplasty in terms of American popularity is breast augmentation.
So, of all the people who get lipoplasty, which gender gets it more? Is it men, or is it women? Most people would tend to guess women, and in this case they would be right. Women get somewhere between 80% and 90% of all lipoplasties performed in the United States. However, even though men currently form a relatively small percentage of the total number of lipectomies, it may not always be this way.
Lipoplasty has been fairly consistently growing in popularity among men. When the procedure was first introduced, it seems that women were almost exclusively the only ones to undergo it. Now, somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 men get the surgery each year.
A number of polls and surveys also seem to support the idea that men are beginning to take more of an interest in liposuction and in cosmetic surgery in general. More and more men say that they would be willing to consider getting cosmetic surgery, and more and more say that they would be comfortable undergoing a cosmetic surgery. A few surveys have even suggested that in certain demographics, men may actually be more accepting of the idea of cosmetic surgery than women.
It seems likely that male interest in suction lipectomy will continue to grow as the years progress. In all sorts of arenas, men are taking more of an interest in their appearance, and so it shouldn’t be surprising that liposuction is also seeing a surge in popularity among men.
Although women will probably continue to form the bulk of lipoplasty patients, this may not always be the case. Someday, the number of men undergoing the procedure could meet or possibly even exceed the number of women.
