Which Heartburn Foods Are Bad For You?

For a sufferer, nothing is more discomforting than having to live each day with heartburn. Foods, for example, are very restricted because some food groups are known to cause pain afterwards when eaten. Just imagine having to fight the urge not eat your favorite because it’s ‘bad’ for you.

But then, there seems to be nothing else around it if you want to prevent the swelling pain later. That chocolate may taste great, but is the pain worth it? The answer to that is, of course, a resounding ‘no’.

Fortunately, there is a fix to those who are living day to day with heartburn. Foods might be restricted, but it does not mean there’s nothing else you can do about it.

A good way to solce this dietary dilemma is by making a list of food that are not ’safe’ for you and a list of food groups that are ‘okay’ for you. Then, look for heartburn-friendly recipes which you can easily prepare at home and know which kinds of food you can eat when you are out with friends.

So what are the foods that cause heartburn?

Generally, these are the ones that cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax. These are fat, fatty food (red meat, chicken skin, ground beef and sirloin), oily food, butter, mayonnaise, dairy products, alcohol, chocolate, tea, caffeine, tomatoes, tomato-based products, food prepared in tomatoes or tomato-based products (macaroni, pizza, spaghetti, etc), spices (onion, pepper, chili powder, etc) food prepared or cooked in spices, junk food, citrus fruits and canned or natural juice from citrus fruits.

On the other hand, here are some of the safe foods for heartburn, and should be a part of your heartburn-free diet: Food rich in complex carbohydrates (bread, cereal, graham crackers, pretzels, etc), apples, bananas, food low in fat, steamed vegetables, grains, whole wheat and legumes.

If you want to know more heartburn-free recipes, the web is a great and reliable source to turn to. It has tons of free recipes for those who have heartburn and want to avoid the ones that cause it.

Amazon also has books on heartburn-friendly recipes and meal plans which you might want to buy. Clickbank has downloadable books written for heartburn patients like you, as well.

Post a list of ‘unwanted’ and ‘okay’ food groups in a place easily seen each day, like your ref. This serves as your daily reminder to be careful with your food intake.

Bring this list with you when going out food shopping. Also, when you are out eating with friends at a restaurant, food menus usually have descriptions of each food item they serve. If you know by heart which food groups are ‘okay’ and ‘not okay’ to you, you will have an easier time deciding which to order.

Another thing you can do to control the pain associated with heartburn is observing other preventive steps which are easy to do. These include wearing loose clothing and accessories around the waist (belts, underwear, shorts, etc), eating a few small meals spread throughout the day, maintaining your ideal weight, waiting for a few hours after each meal before lying down and using a heartburn wedge pillow as you sleep.

It is not the end for you if you have heartburn. Foods, for one, should be given careful attention because they are known to cause some pain and discomfort upon consumption. So if you want to avoid this unpleasant scenario, I advise you to follow the tips above.
