Sometimes cigarette smokers will have the desire to quit, but just can not seem to find the willpower and determination that it takes to get the job done. For these people, there is a middle ground they could take that would still be helpful to them, but allow them to still enjoy some smoking behavior. Smoking can be similar to having an alcoholic drink; absolutely no alcohol is usually the best thing for anyone, but a drink a day is not supposed to kill you either.
The thing about being addicted to nicotine and the smoking habit is that instead of one or twice a day, most smokers want to indulge themselves twenty times a day or more. This is no casual indulgence. There are certain times of the day and events that seem to trigger when a smoker wants a cigarette and that can be almost anything at any time. Below are the times and events when smokers generally think they have to have a cigarette:
When they first wake up in the morning they want to smoke because it has usually been hours since they have done it and their body wants that nicotine fix.
With their first cup of coffee if they drink it, even though they might have just had a cigarette a short time before when they got out of bed.
In the car on their way to work if they drive themselves, even though they might have already had two and it might not even be 9:00 am yet.
If a person does not work during the day or works at home, they might have a couple of more cigarettes before lunch time. For those that work, a cigarette is usually the first thing want before they even eat.
For the stay at home smoker, they might have several more before others would be getting off of work. When smokers clock out at the end of the work day, they might have one cigarette and then quickly light another just so they can catch up.
After dinner, almost every smoker wants a cigarette right away.
Before bedtime, a smoker will generally enjoy that last cigarette of the day.
Before they have even realized it, most cigarette smokers will have gone through at least half a pack of cigarettes and usually a whole one during the course of their day. They could likely cut out at least half of that number if they only took the time to really consider what they are doing instead of allowing this habit to control them. Giving in to the urge to smoke becomes easier and easier over the years until most smokers feel like they have lost all control over it. Their smoking habit could be curtailed or even cut out all together if they only tried to do without them one at a time.
