You must have known it. The recurring diarrhea, constipation, bloating, the straining and so on. There’s no denying it there is something wrong with your digestive system. It is IBS. But what is IBS, by the way?

IBS stands for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It is also known for its many names, like functional bowel syndrome, spastic bowel, spastic colon and irritable colon. But whatever you call it, it is a disorder evident in millions of people worldwide. It is not rare at all. But what is saddening is, it is not openly talked about by patients because of its nature. Others prefer to hide it instead.

To understand what IBS is, let us elaborate more on its background.

1. Symptoms – You should know first that IBS is not a disease, but a disorder. To know if you have IBS, watch out for its symptoms, which are diarrhea, bloating and constipation. There are many other IBS symptoms, though, not just the ones stated. What is important is, you should have an early diagnosis to determine your condition. There are other conditions that have similar symptoms. Another thing to know is that, not every IBS symptom will be evident in every patient. That means, there are patients who have diarrhea, others who have bloating, diarrhea, cramps and so on.

2. Causes – The causes of IBS are not yet identified. Although, some think it is because of the food or bacterial infection.

However, you should know that IBS should be studied more. As of now, it is clear that it is a condition characterized by bowels that do not function properly. This condition then leads to the various symptoms that people experience.

3. Triggers – To avoid having worse IBS symptoms, you should know and avoid these triggers.

a. Stress – While it is not yet established that stress indeed can worsen IBS directly, what is clear is that, there are patients who report suffering from deteriorated IBS symptoms when they are under serious stress. In fact, thinking about their condition alone worsens their condition, and their powerlessness over it since there is nothing they can do to make themselves better. But it only makes their health problem much worse than it should be. This is the reason why stress relief is included in an IBS treatment regimen. Counseling, yoga and acupuncture are some of the applications you should undergo.

b. Food – Be careful with your diet if you want to relieve yourself of IBS symptoms. Fat is the worst digestive stimulant which keeps the digestive tract working too much. This later leads to so much pain for the patient. Other triggers to avoid are alcohol and caffeine.

4. Treatments – IBS symptoms can be relieved or subsided through medications and alternative treatments. When symptoms are subsided, however, it does not necessarily mean that you are healed. These symptoms can still come back and sometimes, the pain is much stronger and the symptoms are worse than they were last time.

By keeping these various factors in mind, a person can answer the question of “What is IBS?”
