Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty and suction lipoplasty) seems to be all the rage these days. Everywhere one looks there are internet rumors and tabloid stories discussing which hollywood star or starlet has gotten the surgery. Increasing numbers of the “ordinary people” of America are undergoing the procedure as well.

A lipoplasty surgically removes excess fat from specific target areas on a person’s body. Prior to the surgery, the patient and his surgeon will meet to discuss the patient’s specific goals and expectations and to decide which area or areas the surgeon will treat.

The surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon will numb the area and make one or several small incisions. It is through these small incisions that the surgeon will remove the fat. He or she does this through the use of a special tool called a cannula. A cannula is a small, hollow needle which can be hooked up to a vacuum device of some sort. As the doctor moves the cannula back and forth through the target area of the patient, it breaks up and then suctions the fat out of the body.

The thought of removing fat from specific areas without difficult dieting or strenuous exercise can sound awfully appealing. However, sometimes a person has to make certain changes in their lifestyle, habits and body before they can undergo the procedure. This article will explain two of the major ones.

The first change that some people need to make is, ironically enough, to lose weight. Although removing fat is the purpose of a liposuction, it doesn’t tend to work well on obese or extremely overweight people. One of the reasons for this is that it is best suited to removing relatively small amounts of weight from limited body areas. Obese people tend to have excess body fat in too many places for the surgery to treat. Obese people are encouraged to exercise and eat healthily in order to lower their body weight to within twenty-five or thirty pounds of their ideal weight. At this point, lipoplasty is more likely to be able to help.

Another change that needs to be made involves smoking. Smoking can hamper one’s body’s ability to heal after the surgery, and it can increase one’s chances of serious complications. Almost all surgeons require their patients to quit smoking at least three weeks prior to their surgery.

If you would like to know more about how you can prepare for a liposuction, please speak with a cosmetic surgeon in your area.
