If you’re suffering from sinus pain or pressure now you may be wondering what causes it. Oftentimes it’s more obvious that it’s related to a sinus infection or other sinus problem but often it’s not. There are more than 200 causes of sinus pain. The most common pain is from a sinus problem although pain in the sinuses can be caused by other issues or problems that are not related to your sinuses.
Sinus pain may be felt in the upper teeth or between the eyes, in your ear, on your forehead, jaws or cheeks or other part of your face. It may be felt on the top of your head. Often you’ll have nasal or sinus symptoms or a feeling of pressure along with it including nasal passage or airway obstruction, abnormal sinus drainage or nasal congestion. Any pain on the top of your head or on your forehead that’s because of a sinus problem is referred to as a sinus headache.
Here are some of the causes of sinus pain: sinusitis, chronic or acute, frontal or maxillary sinusitis (involves your maxillary sinuses), ethmoidal sinusitis (involves your ethmoid sinuses), cocaine abuse, Eustachian tube dysfunction, atrophic rhinitis, allergic rhinitis due to many allergens including dust mites, pet hair and mold – which is the most common sinus infection cause, a broken nose – nasal bone fracture and ethmoidal bone fracture (in your ethmoidal cavities).
Also other causes include malignancy, sinus cancer, juvenile nasal angiofibroma, nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum, rhinophyma, anterior ethmoidal nerve neuralgia (in your ethmoidal cavities) or upper respiratory tract infection or other respiratory problem. These are just a few of the causes of pain in the sinus cavities, of which you have four sets of two cavities in your skull. Some are common and some are rare.
If you’re having a one-time sinus pain episode it’s more than likely simple acute sinusitis or the beginning of an infection. If the sinus pain is chronic and you’re suffering over and over again make sure to see your doctor and have it evaluated. More than likely you’re not going to have some of the more serious or rare causes of sinus pain. Sinus headaches are common and you can cure a sinus headache or pain yourself. If your pain continues you may want to do some simple natural treatments at home. But make sure to see your doctor if the pain persists or you’re having continuing problems with severe pain that is not going away.
