If you’ve been thinking about getting lap band surgery because of obesity or weight issues, here are a few of the advantages and disadvantages to consider. Although certain criteria must be met to undergo the surgery such as a morbid obesity diagnosis and body mass index criteria, you may have tried losing weight many other ways and find it difficult and for some reason it’s been impossible for you to do.

The main advantages of lap band surgery are – it has a low mortality rate, it has a less invasive surgical approach using laparoscopic surgery rather than cutting and stapling of the stomach such as in gastric bypass surgery. There is no cutting or re-routing of the intestines, so there is a shorter recovery time. The lap band is adjustable even after surgery. It’s reversible, something that gastric bypass surgery is not.

It has a low rate of complications and reduced risks. In addition, there is a low risk of malnutrition happening after your surgery.

Now some of the disadvantages of the lap band system are – there is a slower initial weight loss compared to gastric bypass surgery. Patients must go for regular follow-ups after surgery for check-ups, fills and necessary adjustments or checks for complications. There is a medical device implanted. Any device inside the body is considered a foreign object by the body and subject to the body’s immune system reaction to it.

The band may slip and therefore not do the job it’s intended to do. The access port may leak and one may have to go back to surgery for a revision or other procedure.

Generally, the complaints with lap band surgery run up to 8% or so of patients who have undergone the surgery. Also about 0.2% of patients have major complications. Other risks are those that can happen with any major surgery. Nausea and vomiting is a possibility. Band slippage and band erosion can happen and the access port problems, may require more surgery.

So these are the main advantages and disadvantages of lap band surgery. If you’re considering gastric bypass surgery, the lap band procedure carries less risks and complications than with gastric bypass. Gastric bypass is permanent, lap banding can be considered temporary but all surgical risks apply.

So if you’re considering lap band surgery make sure you understand not only the advantages and the advantages over gastric bypass surgery but all the risks and complications that can occur as well. If you decide to go ahead make sure you do plenty of research, talk in depth with your weight loss doctor or bariatric surgeon, know what kind of diet you’ll be on and what you can eat, talk to others who have had the surgery or procedure and fully know what is going to or what can happen.
