If you want to quit smoking, there are a few different things that you absolutely have to do in order to succeed. Understanding the reasons that you smoke and the reasons that you want to quit is the most important thing that you can do when you first decide that you want to.

Write down the reasons that you want to stop smoking. If you truly want to stop, then you should be able to come up with at least 3 reasons why you want this to happen. Once you identify your reasons for quitting, it will make the process much easier for you overall.

The next thing that you need to do is understand that it is not the nicotine that keeps you smoking. The nicotine may have been what got you hooked onto the cigarettes in the first place, but it isn’t what keeps you hooked. The hand to mouth habit, the feel of having a cigarette in your hand, and the rest of the items that go along with it almost become a part of who you are as a person. If you try to get rid of all of it at once, it puts you almost into shock. The mental addiction to cigarettes is the main thing that you need to work on breaking, because the nicotine withdrawals are over within a few weeks at the most. Nicotine gums, patches, and lozenges are expensive and most of the time, all you end up doing is spending a bunch of money on those, fail quitting, and go back to cigarettes.

Something else that you will want to do is find something to replace cigarettes with. Get a hobby. Find something that you can do to keep your mind off of cigarettes and smoking. Exercise can work and can actually help motivate you to go through with quitting, because exercise is more difficult when you smoke. Spend your money on supplies for your hobby instead of cigarettes.

The last thing that you absolutely have to do is stay consistent. If you set a rule down for yourself about how many cigarettes you can have a day or where you’re able to smoke in your house, do not break that rule under any circumstances. If you do, you are sending a message to yourself that it’s okay to fail. Stay consistent and you will succeed at anything you want to do in life, not just getting rid of an addiction.
