There comes a time in the life of every smoker where they realize that not only is the habit that they have had for years is not only bad for them, but probably shortening their life span significantly. Not only is smoking bad for you, but each year thousands of smokers die from lung cancer attributed to the habit. If you are a smoker, then you are probably well aware of these lethal possibilities, and you more than likely want to be able to quit, but find that there are just too many stories of people who tried to quit and failed floating around. Well, if you are that unsure of your ability to quit on your own, then here are some tips that you may find helpful as you try to kick nicotine out of your life.

If you are serious about wanting to kick the habit, then the first thing that you need to do is talk to your doctor and get yourself checked for any possible health complications that have arisen as a result of smoking. In the unfortunate event that you have contracted some sort of complication, then it is important that you seek treatment as soon as possible. If you have not developed any conditions, then talk to your doctor about your desire to quit smoking, and ask about any form of aid he or she may be able to give.

If you ask your doctor about using nicotine gum or patches to quit, be sure to keep in mind that gum or patches are not the solution to building the will power to quit. Granted, they can be helpful and aid you in your goal to quit, but they should not be used as crutches. In some cases the gum and patches can backfire and just make nicotine cravings stronger.

The next thing you need to do is find a way to spend the time that you normally would have spent smoking doing something else. This means that you must use your time wisely and distract yourself from cravings to smoke. It sounds easier than it really is, but if you work at it, it should be no problem at all. You must remember that your mind is the greatest battlefield as you try to quit. Remember to stick with it, and that anything worth having, or in this case getting rid of, takes time.
