If it is at all possible, when we get older, we should try and stay as active as we possibly can. Being active could be doing some sort of physical activity or it can be a mental activity. Whichever it is, activity helps seniors to stay in touch with others and helps as an anti-aging agent.
Activity is especially great for helping the mind stay young. There are a lot of different things that can be done during the different seasons and below you will find just a handful of ideas of what you can do to stay active during the four seasons of the year.
Winter is usually not the best time of the year for a lot of people to go out and do outdoor activities, especially if you are a senior that lives in one of the colder climates. In fact for some seniors going outside could end up being dangerous. Just a simple slip on a spot of ice could cause a serious injury to someone who is older.
Since more than likely a senior isn’t going to be frolicking out in the snow, they might want to get themselves interested in doing a variety of different crafts to keep them busy. Knitting and crocheting hats, scarves, sweaters and blankets that can be given as gifts to friends and relatives or better yet they can be given to the needy.
Another idea is to make ornaments for Christmas trees or decorations for around the house. And don’t forget about the advent calendar. This is a great one if you have grandchildren and want to make them something they can enjoy the entire time leading up to Christmas.
Consider joining an indoor fitness program that is geared towards seniors. There are light aerobics classes that can be taken or dance classes that might be fun. There also might be some yoga classes that are geared towards the needs of seniors. Other classes you might consider as a senior are cooking and art classes.
Once spring comes around, there will be plenty of opportunity to be able to go out and start enjoying the nicer weather. You might want to start getting out and doing things in the garden and if you don’t have your own garden consider joining a communal garden or get together with some other seniors and start one up.
Another thing that is becoming a fast growing activity is bird watching. This allows you to get outdoors, explore nature and view a variety of different birds that have come back from their winter homes to begin life fresh in the spring.
Once summer rolls around, most people even seniors are tempted to want to get out in it and soak up the warmth of the suns rays, however; as we all know too much sun can be quite harmful if not done in moderation. But do consider taking time out and take short walks during the warm summer months and even consider joining the YMCA for some water aerobics.
Consider volunteering to help with your 4th of July fireworks celebration in your town. It doesn’t take much physical activity to help out. You might want to help with setting up the area for the fireworks, or try and get music organized to go with the fireworks, organize food stands or whatever might be needed for the celebration.
Fall is a great time to do something outside. It’s not too hot and it’s not too cold at this point in time and in some areas the fall color is a must see. Consider taking a trip to some of the areas near you that are filled with the changing trees. Consider finding some place that actually offers hay rides during the fall. This will give you an up close and personal look at all the beauty that fall has to offer.
