There are effective methods of losing belly fat, but abdominal exercise is not one of them. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you should consider becoming more physically active, simply to improve your overall health, but you should not expect exercise alone to help you lose weight.
Did you know that an overweight person needs more calories to maintain their weight than someone that is slender? Your age and muscle mass affect the amount of calories necessary to maintain a specific weight, too. The example below does not take those factors into consideration, but it will help you understand how your weight affects the number of calories your body burns every day.
A sedentary person that is 5 foot 4 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds needs 1870 calories per day, just to maintain his or her current weight. A sedentary person of the same height that is a trim 125 pounds needs only 1570.
So, if that 5 foot 4 inch sedentary 180 pound person went on a fast or other very low calorie diet and lost 55 pounds, then returned to his or her old eating habits after achieving the goal, what would happen? This is an important question, because it explains why low calorie diets are ineffective for permanently losing belly fat.
By returning to a daily diet that provided 1870 calories, the 125 pound person would gain about a pound every 11 or 12 days. In less than two years, that person would be right back in the same position, frustrated and overweight.
Look at all of the celebrities that have lost 50 or more pounds, only to regain it. They blame thyroid problems, stress and other factors, when the actual problem is that no one told them about maintenance.
Choosing a maintenance diet is extremely important for permanently losing belly fat. You will need to calculate the number of calories that you can consume at your new weight, check the scales on a regular basis and adjust your diet accordingly.
If you continue to lose weight, then your muscle mass, your age or your metabolism have contributed to an increase in the number of calories that your body burns every day. If you start to gain weight, even after adjusting your caloric intake to suit your new body, then you may have sabotaged your metabolism or you may be eating the wrong foods.
Permanently losing belly fat is not just about the number of calories consumed, it is about the type of calories consumed. In other words, the foods that you choose to eat make a difference.
A single cookie and a half cup of black beans have about the same number of calories, but the beans provide protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals, while the cookie provides only empty calories. Your body recognizes the difference, knows what it needs and will be satisfied after a half cup of beans, but still hungry after the cookie.
There are many other things that you need to learn about foods for permanently losing belly fat. You have only just begun. You may be surprised at what you learn.
