Bed bugs be gone with organic mattresses?!

Bed bugs, those awful and nasty critters making a “terrific” comeback to a bed near you, can be stopped and avoided by using organic mattresses and/or organic mattress covers.

The numbers of bed bugs in the U.S. are believed to have increased by 500 percent in recent years, mostly due to the increase in international travel as well as the use of weaker, non-DDT pesticides for the control of cockroaches. Pest control professionals stopped using DDT to kill cockroaches about 10 years ago. The uptick in bed bugs started around that time.

It’s very difficult to rid your bed and your home of bed bugs once they’ve arrived. The best way to get rid of them is to use extreme heat — they can’t survive in temperatures greater than 113 degrees Fahrenheit. So grab a steam cleaner and hit all areas of your home where you’ve found the creatures. You’ll need to steam heat your bed, your curtains, your couch, all furniture — it’s quite a production.

If you feel you won’t do a good enough job on your own, an exterminator can do the job — but a considerable expense.

You’ll also need to strip your house clear of just about anything the bed bugs can hide in as you or the exterminator come at them with the steam heat. The whole process is quite extensive.

Instead, the best offense against bed bugs is, as the sports analogy goes, a good defense — purchase organic mattresses for your family members’ beds.

Organic mattresses or mattress liners/cover can be a good bet for you to keep the little biters at bay. Organic mattresses are made without using harmful chemicals while using organic cotton or wool as filling and organic cotton for the mattress cover.

Wool is a wondrous bed bug barrier in organic mattresses. Wool is a moisture barrier. The man-made fibers in a regular mattress will have some trap some moisture, resulting in mold after a while. Bed bugs also love warm, moist areas.

While most people don’t think of rubber as being organic, you may purchase organic mattresses that are made of natural rubber and then encased with organic wool and/or cotton. In addition, especially when you’re purchasing organic mattresses for children, you may not need a rubber mattress pad since your rubber organic mattress is naturally water absorbent.

Another reason to choose organic mattresses for the beds in your home or apartment is the fact that you and your family members have a reduced chance of getting an allergic reaction from your mattress. Organic mattresses often are made with organic cotton, so you’ll have a better chance of avoiding dust mites, pet dander and other particles that can cause sneezing and other allergic reactions.

Finally, organic mattresses are wonderful to use in a baby’s crib or toddler’s bed. A baby’s immune system is developing as it grows, and an organic mattress helps keep the little ones from absorbing the toxins that are often inherent in a regular mattress.

In addition, organic mattresses made of wool are more fire retardant, since wool acts as a natural fire retardant.
