A lot of smokers engage in their habit without really thinking it through. Research has shown that 90% of adults who currently smoke started when they were teenagers. They started the smoking habit for the wrong reasons and are continuing to smoke for the wrong reasons. In fact, if you really think about it, there really is no good reason to smoke, other than the fact that nicotine could make you feel good.
So if you are trying to quit, here are some facts compiled from research, testing, and medical evaluations that just might make you kick the habit for good!
The tobacco plant contains natural doses of nicotine, which is classified as a drug. Large doses of nicotine could be fatal.
There are over 4,000 chemicals found in cigarette smoke, and you are probably familiar with many of those toxins:
Cyanide – The same chemical used to kill rats. Yes, rats!
Ammonia – Used for many household cleaning projects, including the task of cleaning the toilet!
Acetone – The same stuff used to remove nail polish.
Tar – The black, gooey, sticky stuff that workers use to pave our new roads with.
Arsenic – An ingredient used to manufacture glass, rat poison (again) and weed killer.
Formaldehyde – A carcinogen used in new clothing, towels and sheets. Can also be found in household cleaning products.
All of those ingredients and a few thousand more are what you inhale every single time you light up. Humans are not meant to ingest any amount of weed killer, rat poison, or road paving ingredients – ever!
If you smoke regularly, your habits will catch up to you in the long run. There is a huge chance that by the time you hit your 40s, 50s, or 60s, you will have developed some type of minor or major disease. These diseases can include respiratory problems, cancer, heart disease, or stroke. Really, pick and choose because cigarette smoke doesn’t discriminate and doesn’t really care which disease you develop.
If your loved ones live with you and do not smoke, there is a good chance that the secondhand smoke will harm them before it harms you. Their bodies are not used to the smoke and are exposed at intermittent times while your body is used to having the nicotine and everything else in it. If you have pets, they will be subjected to the secondhand smoke as well.
Smoking is unhealthy. It’s a well-known, accepted fact. The difference between passing on prematurely or living a long, vivacious life could very well lie in that white stick you are holding between your fingers.
