Do you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Frustrating, isn’t? You are not all alone. Millions of people have it and are as frustrated as you are. It is all the more frustrating when they are looking for a treatment when it does not have a cure. Its symptoms should be cured to avoid getting IBS episodes.
But what do we know about IBS? The fact of the matter is there should be more research about this disorder to help the general public know about it and detect it in case they have felt or experienced some of its symptoms. More research should be done, because t was only in 1992 that a standard set of symptoms used to diagnose this illness was established.
More about this disorder is still a mystery or not yet clearly known to the medical community. But what are the facts that you should know of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
1. It is not deadly – Patients who manifest symptoms related to Irritable Bowel Syndrome should be glad about one thing and that it is not fatal. It is not a disease. It will not develop into a deadly form of cancer.
2. It is not rare – Believe me when I said that millions of people are suffering from IBS. In fact, around ten to twenty percent of the population are affected by this condition, and rising, probably. IBS is not a rare disorder but patients would rather not talk about it openly with their loved ones and other people because of the nature that surrounds this condition. It is also embarrassing. Which is why there are IBS support groups that exist, to help patients and educate them on causes, preventive measures and more.
3. Its cause is unknown – There are many suspected causes behind Irritable Bowel Syndrome. These causes are yet to be proven. They are just theories, as mentioned. Why are there little findings about IBS? Well, since it is not fatal, there seems to be no need nor urgency to study more of it unlike other deadly diseases. Its cause is still unclear, though it is suspected that IBS is caused by a bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal tract. Others think it is related with the immune system. It may be due to the malfunctioning of the colon related with food.
4. Its symptoms are many and contradicting – Its symptoms are varying. These include gas, bloating, flatulence, constipation and diarrhea, among others. You see, its symptoms are many and yet they contradict one another, which is why not every symptom is present ine very patient. For example, there are individuals who have IBS with constipation while others have IBS with diarrhea. Be sure to get a diagnosis to ensure you have IBS.
5. Your diet affects it – Since IBS is related with the digestive process, it is the case that what you eat can affect how you feel. When eating, soluble fiber should be included in your diet. It acts as a stabilizer in the system, preventing both diarrhea and constipation.
Avoid these triggers:
a. High- fat
b. Alcohol
c. Carbonated Drinks
d. Coffee (even decaffeinated coffee is not good)
e. Dairy Products (even for those without lactose intolerance)
6. Not all types of fiber can help with it – Fiber is good, but for IBS patients, note that insoluble fiber that could worsen the symptoms of the illness. Instead, they should eat a lot of soluble fiber because of the reasons mentioned above.
