With the recent increase in popularity of kettlebell training, there is a strong demand for certified trainers. The benefits of becoming a certified kettlebell instructor are many.

However, becoming certified is no cakewalk. It will be physically challenging and require an investment of your time and money. So, before you sign up for the next certification course, it is important to know your options and decide which program will be best suited to your goals and commitment level.

How Does Certification Work?
There are various certifying bodies and paths to certification. This article will highlight only three. You will want to do a more exhaustive search and evaluation before you decide which way to go.

1. Russian Kettlebell Challenge or RKC
This is the Pavel Tsatsouline School of kettlebell training. Certification with the RKC is grueling and challenging, but holding that certificate will earn you top respect amongst kettlebell fanatics.
The basic information:
•There are six levels of certified instructor, three of which are by appointment or invitation only.
•Cost of the RKC Certification Course is about $2,700. A substantial discount is given for re-attendance in the event that an applicant does not pass the instructor test.
•Applicants must pass a test to earn instructor certificate. Alternatively, they can forgo the test and receive a certificate of attendance.

Criteria needed to earn an RKC diploma (official criteria from Dragon Door website):
•Exhibit safe and efficient technique in the foundation exercises.
•Demonstrate good judgment, especially concerning safety.
•Demonstrate effective teaching skills.
•Pass the Kettlebell Snatch Test.
•Pass the Grad Workout.
•Abide by the RKC Code of Conduct.

2. Crossfit
This is a strength and conditioning program used by many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and professional athletes worldwide. The training program is not kettlebell-focused.
The basic information:
•There are two levels of certification. Level 1 is a basic introduction to fundamental concepts and movements. Level 2 is a performance test.
•Cost of both Level 1 and 2 courses is $1,000 each.
•Applicants who wish to go on to instruct others are recommended to get Level 2 certification with Level 1 as a prerequisite.
•Level 2 Crossfit applicants will be tested and evaluated on: ability to teach CrossFit’s 9 Foundational Movements to a small group of students of multiple levels.

3. American Kettlebell Club
Certification with the AKC is taught and conducted exclusively by Valery Fedorenko, a World Champion in Kettlebell Lifting with over 21 years experience. The basic information:
•The only level of certification is Kettlebell Lifting Coach.
•There is now a prerequisite that the WKC Fitness Trainer License needs to be completed prior to attending a Coach Certification.
•The cost of Coach certification is $2,000 and (for a limited time) a set of seven pro-grade kettlebells will be awarded at completion.
•The AKC focus on the lifts performed in international competitions: the Snatch, Jerk and Long-cycle.
