The modern life sometimes can feel like one perpetual battle of the bulge. As modern culture makes it more and more easy to live increasingly sedentary lives, it can take real effort to stay active, healthy and trim.

Let’s look at a day in the life of an average American. He wakes up, bleary-eyed and a little too late. He takes a quick shower and grabs something quick to eat as he dashes to work. He doesn’t have enough time for something healthy, so he just grabs some sugary cereal or a poptart. Or perhaps he skips breakfast altogether.

After a ten yard dash to the car, he drives to work. Upon arriving at work, he sits in a cubicle, not moving much except his fingers, not standing except to hang out at the water cooler or to take a bathroom break. At the office, he sips coffee and perhaps snacks on candy bars.

On his lunch break, he drives to a nearby burger joint and goes through the drive through. After picking up and eating his burger, fries and milkshake, he drives back to the office, where he remains until it’s quitting time. However, there’s a project that really needs doing, and the deadline’s tomorrow, so he stays late.

When he finally makes it out of the office, it’s dark, and his head is swimming. Although he’s been sitting most of the day, his mind has been doing very real and very difficult work. When he finally gets home, he throws together something quick for dinner and watches a couple of shows on TV to unwind. He lets himself have a little extra dessert, because he’s tired and overworked and doesn’t he deserve it?

Maybe as he watches, he goes over one or two things more for work, or maybe he just cruises around the internet. By the time he finally unwinds enough to go to bed, it’s late, and the most active he’s been all day was when he rushed to the car.

With a lifestyle like this, it’s no wonder that increasing numbers of people are gaining weight. This is one of the things which makes liposuction (also called lipoplasty) so appealing to people. It surgically targets and removes the fat that people tend to put on. However, if we imagine the man from our story undergoing a lipoplasty to help him remove some of his belly fat, but not changing any of his personal habits, it’s pretty clear that the results won’t last. Eventually, he will gain it back.

Liposuction typically works best when it is accompanied with changes in lifestyle, such as improving one’s diet and making efforts to become at least a little more active.
