If you are one of the millions of people who suffer from some type of thyroid disease, you know what it’s like to be on a roller coaster, both physically as well as emotionally. Having to take medication every day just to be able to live well can be devastating, as well as depressing. Knowing that if you don’t take you meds every day can lead to even worse conditions, or even death can sometimes make you feel like you have a ball and chain tied to your leg.

Those of you who don’t know what a thyroid problem is, then let see if we can put it in simple terms. The thyroid is an egg shaped gland in your throat, close to your voice box, and secondary to the pituitary gland in importance and function. It controls metabolism, emotional states, and even the functions of other glands and organs. If you have a problem, you get what is often called a goiter, or enlargement of the thyroid. It can cause swallowing to become painful, and can upset your hormonal balance, as well as a number of other things.

There are two different kinds of thyroid conditions, hypo, and hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism makes your body sluggish, and your metabolism slow way down. People who suffer from this condition often are overweight, and this can lead to diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease. Having this type of thyroid condition can make you feel sad, have a lack of energy, and many people that suffer depression also have this problem.

Hyperthyroidism on the other hand, is virtually the opposite. These people can eat and eat and it seems like they never gain weight. They are active, and often misdiagnosed as having ADD. Their metabolism runs rampant, and can burn out organs and glands much faster than a normal person.

There are good things though. There are many different types of homeopathic methods that can help with both of these thyroid conditions. For people with hypothyroidism, they should exercise regularly, avoid foods that are highly processed, like fast food. They need to regulate the amount of fat and carbohydrates that they eat, and because part of the problems with this disease is the lack of iodine, you should eat fish and sea food that has high iodine levels, or at least Omega-3 fish oil.

People with hyperthyroidism should avoid any kinds of stimulating foods and drink, energy drinks, coffee and sodas. They need to eat foods that have high carbohydrates, and ones that are good for you. Whole grains, bananas, oranges, etc. are examples of foods you should be eating. Again, avoid processed foods that have a lot of chemicals and preservatives.

There is a wealth of information about thyroid conditions online. If you are experiencing weight gain, even with proper diet and exercise, or seem to start a bunch of different tasks and can’t complete them, then you should contact your doctor about thyroid problems. It requires a simple blood test, and knowing if you have a condition or not could actually save your life.
