If you have heartburn you know there are certain foods that make your condition worse. That is why it is recommended that you have a heartburn food plan which outlines the food you can safely eat and avoid.
Heartburn happens when there is a reflux of liquid containing pepsin, to the esophagus and to the throat. The liquid that comes from the stomach is acidic, burning the lining of your esophagus. It this happens frequently, a visit to the doctor is recommended to help you cure this condition.
One of the things that are advised for you to do is, as mentioned, having a heartburn food plan. The ones you should avoid generally are those that are hard to be digested, since they put too much pressure on the stomach and the lower esophagus muscle, and those that can make the lower esophagus muscle relax.
A healthy and recommended heartburn food plan consists of the following tips:
1. Exclude these food groups from your daily diet.
As mentioned, not all food can be eaten by a heartburn patient like you. From now on, be careful with what you put into your mouth by saying no to all these: Fat, food containing fat, butter, cream, oil, margarine, cream soups, creamy food, mayonnaise, pastries, spices, fried food, citrus fruits, citrus juices, tomatoes, products made of tomatoes, food with tomato-based products, dairy products, red meat, junk food and alcohol.
2. Include these food groups in your daily diet.
Despite the extensive list above, it does not mean you can no longer eat anything from now on. There are still food you can eat without worries, and these are the following: Food low in fat, food high in complex carbohydrates, grains, beans, legumes, apples, bananas, steamed vegetables and of course, whole wheat.
3. Ask a doctor or a nutritionist for more detailed and extensive lists of ‘unwanted’ and ‘wanted’ food for heartburn patients. Or you can use the internet to know more of these food groups.
4. Download or buy a book that contains recipes for heartburn sufferers. The research had been done for you – now you don’t have to find out on your own which kinds of food you can prepare without worries.
5. Post these lists of harmful and safe food on your ref to make it easier for you. These list will always remind you that you need to be careful with your diet from now on.
6. If you are out with friends, it is best to bring your own lunch. But if that sounds boring to you, don’t bother to eat whatever’s served if you are not sure about its ’safety’. Ask yourself, is this food worth the risk later?
At first, it could be hard because there are many ingredients involved but you should ask for something baked or grilled instead of fatty or fried ones, for example.
Food menus normally have descriptions of what they serve, so it is easy for you to know if what you’d like to order is ‘risky’ or not. If you are not sure, you can ask.
7. An advisable way of keeping track of the safe food for you is by having a heartburn food record. This records all the food and drinks you ate and drank for the day, as well as the symptoms you felt, if any. When keeping a food journal, you should specify the type of food you are and how it was cooked.
Following a heartburn food plan is a must for every heartburn sufferer. While this means avoiding some of your favorites, I advise you to just replace them with something healthier that will not cause you any harm.
