There are roughly 350 million individuals that are suffering from different types of arthritis Worldwide. Approximately 40 million from these people are in the United States, and a quarter million of which are children. More than half of those suffering population are below 65 years of age and that 60% of those from the United States are women.
Arthritis is literally the inflammation of the joints in the body.
Joint is the part of the body where the bones meet. The affected joints might be swollen, tender and painful during movement. There are several types of arthritis but the most common ones are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis and lupus arthritis.
Osteoarthritis:
Osteoarthritis, also known as the degenerative joint disease, commonly occurs in older people manifested by degeneration of particular cartilage and deformations in the synovial membrane and bones and is often accompanied by stiffness and pain.
The most common causes of osteoarthritis include the following:
- Normal dilapidation of joints and bones due to aging
- Hereditary tendencies of developing such disease
- Obesity that causes too much stress on the joints
- Joint trauma caused by spot injury
- Abusive use of joints
- Inflammation of joints secondary to rheumatoid and gout arthritis
Patients suffering from osteoarthritis might complain of pain and swelling, and stiffness of joints usually in hands, ankles, knees and hips. Deformities in the hands and fingers are also expected to occur on arthritic patients. Nearly 27 million Americans are said to have been affected by osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid Arthritis:
Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease that causes inflammation to connective tissues and is commonly found in women aged 35 to 45 years old. As an inflammatory type of disease, it may lead to joint deformity, joint pain or even disability. It is also an autoimmune disease since it causes certain immune cells to malfunction and attack the person’s own body. Rheumatoid arthritis has no cure. Nearly 2 million Americans are found to have this disease. Approximately 75% of the rheumatoid arthritic sufferers are women. It is believed to begin in middle age but the younger ones are also prone to develop such disease. Despite the increasing number of affected people, the definite cause of this type of arthritis is still not known. But some studies are gaining a good understanding as to how rheumatoid arthritis develops.
Gouty arthritis:
Gout is considered to be the most painful type of arthritis. It is mainly caused by the build up of uric acid crystals around the joints.
Lupus arthritis:
Lupus arthritis is another type of auto immune disease causing healthy cells to harm the body leading a damaged body tissues and inflammation. Lupus is hard to diagnose and is usually mistaken for other diseases. It is for this reason that it is referred as the “great imitator”.
In general, arthritis is classified as a rheumatic disease. All types of arthritis are similar in a sense that they all normally affect joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons and cartilage.
