The first twenty four hours after any surgery can be perplexing and uncomfortable. The day following liposuction can be also, especially if patients do not know what to expect. Doing their research and talking with a doctor can help patients prepare for post-operative care anticipate their condition the first day after the procedure.

Patients should be able to leave the doctor’s office within an hour of the operation being finished. However, they should not drive themselves home because of any residual effects of the anesthesia. It is recommended that they not be alone for the first twenty four hours in case their condition becomes unstable and they need help. They should not operate any machinery or make important decisions for the first twenty four hours, but the next day many people are capable of driving their cars again. Nausea is also a side effect of the anesthesia.

For the first few hours after surgery patients should rest to let their body recuperate from the operation. However, most can return to work and other normal activities the next day as long as these activities are not strenuous.

Temperature elevation can be expected in the day following surgery as a consequence of the surgical trauma. Inflammation, soreness, and swelling will also occur, but can be treated with Tylenol. However, pain killers such as aspirin or ibuprofen should be avoided as they can promote bleeding and suppress the immune system.

Dizziness is also common and caused by a few things, such as when the compression garments are removed or when urinating. Liposuction wounds are dressed in elastic compression garments that hold absorbent pads in place and cause a firm compression that aids the drainage of excess fluids in the wound. The day after surgery these garments can be removed to be washed and allow the patient a shower, but should be removed carefully to prevent or lessen dizziness and fainting from decompression. Removing the garments 10 minutes before standing should decrease the chance of this.

Fainting after urination the day after liposuction (similar to post-micturation syncope after childbirth) is also a possibility. Patients should stand carefully after urination and sit or lie on the floor quickly if they do feel dizzy. They should also not lock the door when using the toilet or shower in case they do faint so they can be reached and helped.

Leaks from the absorbent pads are possible, especially within the first twenty four hours. Patients who are sensitive of blood should know they will see some on their pads. It is also advisable to sit and lay on towels at first so to protect furniture from any leaking fluids. Tumescent lipo especially will have a lot of drainage and an increased likelihood of leakage. But this drainage is good because it prevents excess bruising.

If local anesthesia was used patients need not worry about their diet following the procedure. They should drink adequate amounts of liquids to prevent dehydration however, but abstain from alcohol. Food will help the antibiotics prescribed to prevent infection.

When patients understand what to expect the day following liposuction they will feel more comfortable going into the procedure and going home to recover afterwards. They will know what to expect and be able to prepare. Patients should always discuss such details with their doctor so they know how to properly take care of themselves.
