If you have no problem consuming via a glass of water, drugs and rocket fuel then you don’t need a home water treat system.

But if you are concerned about the prescription drugs that have been discovered in the water supply of some 41 million Americans or the rocket fuel in tap water that the EPA says doesn’t need to be removed, you’ll need such a system

But which is the best water treatment system? You’ll first need to know what contaminants are in your tap water and which filtering technology has the qualities to best remove those contaminants.

Filtering Technologies

1. Distillation. This method is excellent at removing bacteria, heavy metals and radioactivity. Bacteria and other microbiological contaminants, are the most dangerous of all drinking water contaminants because they could kill you fairly quickly.

Distillation however, is ineffective in removing synthetic chemicals with boiling points that are lower than that of water.

To solve this problem, you have to add a carbon filter to the distiller. When this is done, distillers become the most complete drinking water treatment system.

One short coming of distillation that has no remedy is the fact that this process strips the vital trace elements that your body needs from your tap water. So if you have no problems drinking mineral-free water, distillation is your answer.

2. Reverse osmosis. Great at removing organic chemicals; partially removes radioactivity, inorganic compounds and heavy metals. Not effective at removing bacteria and other pathogens.

But perhaps the biggest drawback is how costly reverse osmosis filters are to buy and maintain. They waste 2-3 gallons for every gallon of filtered water produced

3. Carbon Filters. These are excellent at removing synthetic chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides from your water supply as well as drugs in the drinking water.

Out of all drinking water contaminants, people will tell you that they are most concerned about chemicals. Unlike distillation and reverse osmosis, they don’t strip the trace minerals that are vital to your body, from tap water.

The downside to carbon filtration is that it performs limited removal of microbiological contaminants, read that as bacteria and waterborne parasites. And as mentioned before, microbiological elements are the most dangerous of contaminants.

4. UV Filtration. Ultraviolet water filters are a fantastic germicidal water treatment system. They render inactive, bacteria, viruses and waterborne parasites.

The biggest drawback is that they are less effective when sediments are present in your tap water. So in order for it to do its job well, you have to install a sediment remover, like a carbon filter.

What To Do Now

Get your tap water tested. This will tell you which contaminants are plaguing your water supply and allow you to select a filtering technology that can remove those contaminants.

Which ever filter you get, you won’t achieve 100% removal of all contaminants but you can sure vastly improve upon the quality of tap water.

Plus, make sure that the filter you get is a quality unit from a reputable supplier. There are many suppliers on the internet, so do your due diligence.

One way to accomplish this is to make sure that any filtration unit you buy is certified. This will go a long way in ensuring your filtration unit represents quality and money well spent.
