Should you strive to be lean, or should you strive for skinny? There’s a real difference, and making the right choice can transform your life. Do you know what it is?
Deciding whether you want to be lean or be skinny is basically deciding whether you want to lose weight or lose fat. Making the right choice here is so crucial that it is worth spending some time to really understand the difference.
It is easiest to show the difference between lean and skinny with two sets of women: high fashion models and top female athletes. High fashion models give us the skinny side of the picture. They are beautiful and sexy as a rule, but look more closely at them. You might notice that most of them look like they haven’t eaten in a while. That’s because most of them haven’t.
Most of them also look kind of frail and fragile, like a strong breeze would blow them over. I personally have trouble picturing most of them doing basic day to day tasks like carrying a load of groceries or doing any kind of physical work.
Conceptually, getting skinny is easy: just don’t eat. I’m sure many top models do some sort of exercise as well, but there’s a good reason so many models look like they’re starving. They starve themselves to get skinny enough to satisfy the demands of their profession.
Now think about the elite female athletes who compete in the Olympics or professional sports. Most of them are quite lean and strong. Many of them are beautiful and sexy too.
But they’re not like the fashion models. They certainly don’t look like they starve themselves. And they’re not frail or fragile. There’s no question about whether they can carry their own groceries or handle any physical challenge they’re like to run into.
Fashion model versus elite athlete. Skinny versus lean.
Getting lean and fit is a lot harder than simply getting skinny. To be a top athlete, these women combine a healthy diet with serious physical training. Athletes sweat and work hard to develop their bodies, which helps them to succeed at their sport. They work both to lose fat and to build or maintain muscle. They certainly don’t starve themselves.
Skinny people usually have little fat on them, but they don’t have much muscle either. Lean fit people have little fat on them, but they have real muscle too. And that muscle makes all the difference.
Muscle burns calories, meaning you can eat more without gaining weight. Muscle makes every physical activity easier. Muscle protects your joints and bones, making you less likely to be injured. Muscles produce important hormones necessary for a healthy life.
It really comes down to body fat percentage. The lower the amount of fat you have on your body relative to the amount of muscle and other tissue is a key indicator of your health. Elite athletes may be bigger and heavier than fashion models, but they probably have lower body fat percentages.
Getting lean and fit is a lot harder than getting skinny, but the benefits are undeniable. Honestly, who would you rather look like: a high fashion model or an Olympic athlete? What would you rather be: skinny and frail, or lean and strong?
If you would rather be lean and strong like the athletes, then lowering your body fat percentage while preserving muscle is the goal, not lowering some number on a scale. No fad diets for you. Instead, aim to find a plan that will burn the fat you don’t need while preserving or building muscle. A proven, time-tested plan can get you lean, fit, and sexy.
