Love handles are misnamed because no one loves them. The excess fat on our waist above our hipbone causes the midsection to look thick. Sometimes called muffin tops this type of fat can be stubborn and hard to lose. Exercise and diet are not always enough to lose them causing those people to become frustrated and turn to surgery.

Surgery always involves risk and should be a last resort. However, once a decision has been made to have the surgery, a consultation should made with a certified physician to discuss your options. Your full medical history should be so a proper evaluation your health can be assessed. Some surgeries are not encouraged for people in with certain health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, nor for people on certain medications.

There are options that range from an outpatient surgery to a hospitalized stay. Patients who have less than 15 pounds of fat to lose per body part, are typically good candidates for laser liposuction. This surgery is done either in the office of the surgeon or in the hospital, but on an outpatient basis. It takes about an hour per body part and is the least expensive of the options as well as the least risky.

Traditional liposuction is an option for larger areas that are under 100 pounds of fat but over 20 pounds of fat. The tummy tuck is the most drastic option and is advised for those with 100 pounds or more of fat to lose in the abdominal area or those who have lost a 100 pounds or more in weight and have excessive skin that is loose and saggy. The tuck tightens the muscles underneath and cuts off the extra skin.

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia through an incision made in the abdomen from hip bone to hip bone below the belly button and above the pubic bone. Then a second incision is made around the belly button to reposition it. The flap is lifted to reveal the underlying muscle. The surgeon pulls the muscle closer together and stitch them, providing a firm abdominal wall and subsequently a thinner waistline.

The raised skin is pulled down tight over the muscle back down the public bone incision and the excess skin with fat is cut off. Then the skin flap is stitched back to the original incision at the pubic bone. A new belly button is formed by creating a hole where the underlying belly button is and pulling it through. The surgery takes roughly two to five hours, depending on the amount of fat and skin being removed.
