The number of people with kidney disease between the years 1999 and 2006 in the United States was 26 million, with numbers expected to rise as much as 40% by the year 2012. Worldwide the numbers are also on the rise. Common causes of kidney disease are diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. The kidneys function is to remove waste from the body in the form of urine. They also regulate blood pressure and make red blood cells, all important functions, required for the body to function normally.

There are a number of different types of kidney disease, but some of the more common diseases are chronic kidney disease, and kidney stones. Chronic kidney disease is usually a slow progression leading to the final stage, renal failure, if not treated properly. It may take years to reach this final stage, and because the gradual shutting down of the kidneys occurs so slowly, symptoms may not appear for some time.

Kidney stones occur when there is too much of some substance, such as calcium, in the urine. The substance crystallizes and forms a stone. This stone when passed can be very painful and can lead to backed up urine and infection. A common contributor to kidney stones is dehydration, although they occur even in otherwise healthy individuals.

Eating a proper diet is one of the most important actions we can take to help prevent kidney problems. Knowing what types of foods are bad for our kidneys is crucial. Drinking enough water is important for the kidneys, as water helps to flush out the wastes the kidneys are trying to rid our bodies of.

The reduction of sugar is especially good for the kidneys. Too much sugar in the blood causes the kidneys to enlarge and forces them to filter too much blood, and this working overtime can lead to chronic kidney disease. Keeping sugar intake to a reasonable and constant level is much better for proper kidney function. The glycemic index is a numbered measure of how certain foods affect the blood-glucose level in our bodies. The lower the number, the slower the absorption is and the healthier it is for our kidneys. The higher numbered foods make blood sugar levels spike, overworking the kidneys.

Antioxidants and healthy fats are also great for the kidneys. Fish, organic eggs, avocados, nuts and seeds help support kidney function. However, different kidney diseases are improved by different kinds of diets. Consult a registered dietician for a diet that will do the most for your kidneys.
