Heart disease is one of the primary causes of death in the United States. The category of heart disease is a very general one, as there are many kinds of heart diseases that are caused by many different factors.

Smoking, high-cholesterol, and fast food can all play a part in the building of plaque in the artery. Existing health conditions have a role in heart disease as well.

How can heart disease be prevented then? A change in lifestyle is one of the best ways to prevent heart disease. Quitting smoking is a good step to take when trying to prevent this disease. Eating healthier is a good measure to take to prevent heart disease as well. Eating low sodium foods, such as pasta, hot cereal, and dried beans, is one way to go. When butter is needed, to control the sodium levels, unsalted butter is a better choice than salted butter. Animal fat should be avoided, as a lot of cholesterol as well as certain fats in the blood may damage artery walls, increasing the likelihood of plaque build-up.

Other methods to reduce the chances of getting heart disease are controlling preexisting health conditions and exercising daily. Some of the health conditions associated most closely with the development of heart disease are diabetes, high blood pressure, and hypertension. Diabetes is associated with heart disease because high levels of sugar in the blood, most often found in diabetics, can damage artery walls leading to coronary artery disease.

There are many varieties of heart disease. Heart conditions can be centered in the arteries leading to the heart, in the valves of the heart, or in the heart muscle itself. With a lifestyle change, many heart conditions may be avoided. By not smoking, exercising, eating healthier, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing preexisting health problems there is a chance that heart disease can be prevented.
