Fiber is one of the most power weapons against cancer. Research suggests that fiber may prevent colorectal cancer, and it certainly enhances overall health. Fiber moves waste through the digestive tract quickly. This gives toxins less time to damage the intestines. Fiber may detoxify cancer-causing substances before intestinal cells can absorb them. Whole-grains, brown rice, kidney beans, prunes, and berries are good fiber sources.
Non-nutrient substances, known as phytochemicals, may also prevent disease and fight colon cancer. Phenols, flavonoids, and terpenes are phytochemicals found in tomatoes, carrots, citrus fruits, soy beans, broccoli, cabbage, and other plant foods. A healthy colon diet should include these foods, as well.
The American Cancer Society recommends some easy guidelines to prevent colon disorders and fight against colorectal cancer. They include choosing foods from plant sources; limiting dietary fat and alcohol; staying active; and maintaining a healthy weight. Eating right and making good choices can go a long way toward preventing cancer and disease — in the colon and throughout the body.
