Every January, thousands of people join their local gym to lose belly fat. By the end of February, the once busy machines stand quiet, as the new sign-ups become tired and frustrated.

Every year, thousands of people join Jenny Craig. They sign up for a one year program. According to data collected by the company, less than 50% remain in the program for 13 weeks, less than 25% remain for 26 weeks and less than 7% complete the full year.

In the US, people pay Weight Watchers $39.95 per month to lose an average of only 6.6 pounds per year. They pay for packaged foods bearing the Weight Watchers brand name that are actually manufactured by Heinz foods. The packaged foods bearing the name of Jenny Craig are made by Nestle.
It has been said that we have an obesity epidemic in the US and other “Westernized” countries. The cause of the epidemic has yet to be identified. Many of us blame it on Nestle, Heinz and other gigantic food corporations, as well as the fitness industry, as a whole.

The people that signed up for the gym membership in order to lose belly fat and stopped going in February were motivated enough to pay the fees. It is not their fault that they lost their motivation.

They were probably trying to starve themselves at the same time. The idea of decreasing caloric intake while increasing physical activity is completely illogical from a scientific standpoint. Yet, that is what most diet gurus tell you to do.

A bodybuilder will tell you that he does not have the energy to lift, if he does not eat right. The more muscle mass he gains, the more calories he needs.

You cannot lose belly fat, permanently, if you greatly reduce your caloric intake, your body will rebel. It believes that there is a food shortage. It will wait to burn off your fat stores, until the food shortage has ended, in other words, when you start eating again.
The fast food industry may also be to blame for the obesity epidemic. Until recently, many people were unaware that the number of calories in a Big Mac Value Meal was over a thousand. The fact that most of those calories are empty ones, devoid of nutritional value makes matters worse.
Then there are the supplement companies. One company claims that taking their pill will help you lose belly fat by reducing the amount of Cortisol (a hormone) that your body produces. There is no scientific data to support those claims.

There is scientific data supporting a person’s needs for adequate calories and good nutrition. Researchers have made connections between the time that people eat and the amount of calories their bodies’ burn.

At certain times of the day, your body is in storage mode. At others, your fat-burning furnace is functioning fully. You can lose belly fat, if you learn how to keep the furnace going. Stop buying diet foods and learn what you should be eating. You will save money in the long run.
