How to Choose a Dentist

Whether you are changing dentists, switching insurance plans or just recently moved, choosing a new dentist can be an overwhelming and confusing process. With many dentists in the area to choose from, you may not even know where to begin or what to look for. Follow this guide for tips on how to choose a dentist, from where to get recommendations to factors to consider during your first dental visit.

Where to Begin:
To get an honest assessment of specific dentists in the area, ask people you know and trust for recommendations. Family, friends, coworkers and neighbors can let you know which dentists they go to, how they like their dentists, or which dentists they don’t recommend. If you’re new in town and don’t really know anyone, ask your family doctor or local pharmacist. You can also search the American Dental Association (ADA) Member Directory to find ADA-approved dental professionals in your area.

Dental Specialties:
When choosing a dentist, be aware of the various dental specialties that exist. A general dentist can provide general dental care, including regular cleanings and checkups. If you need to find a dentist for your entire family, you should find a dental practice with a pediatric dentist, who specializes in children’s dentistry. You can also choose a dental practice with several dentists who specialize in different fields, such as gum disease, cosmetic dentistry or dental surgical procedures. With several kinds of dentists in one office, you won’t have to travel to a new location if you develop a condition that requires specialized dental treatment.

Consider the Office:
Just because you pick a dentist does not mean you are stuck with that person forever. Use your first dental visit to “try out” your dentist and decide if he or she is right for you. Besides assessing your feelings about the actual dentist (Is the dentist easy to talk to? Is the dentist qualified?), consider the office as well. Try to find a dentist that is close to your home or job to make your visits more convenient. Check to make sure the office is clean and efficient. Is the waiting room too crowded? Is the office staff friendly and helpful? Is scheduling an appointment easy? These are all questions to ask yourself when visiting the dentist’s office.

The main goal of choosing a dentist is to find a professional who will provide you and your family with the oral care you deserve at a cost that you can afford. Finding a dentist who you are comfortable with will contribute to a successful dental visit.
