It is no secret that in large, hot, countries throughout the world, there is a shortage of water. Year after years millions of people die due to the fact that they cannot get to one of the most abundant resources on the planet. However, advances in water filter technology offer a bit of hope for water deprived nations.
In countries such as Ethiopia and various countries throughout Africa, and even some Asian countries, the problem is not so much a lack of water as it is a lack of drinkable water. The reason being is that most water that is available is downright putrid, diseased filled, and nasty water that is, needless to say, not fit for human consumption. However, gravity water filters are a great aid in water purification. A muddy puddle of water can have its contents poured into a gravity water filter, and the filter will take out the dirt, metal particles, and any other particles that do not belong there, and will produce a drastically cleaner water. While a filter may not exactly get rid of diseases, most of the time bacteria and germs can be killed by simply boiling the water.
There are some companies that provide gravity water filters that claim that their product can remove E. Coli, Klebsiella, Cholera, Shigella, Salmonella, Guinea worms, and other such parasites and bacteria, and while they can get rid of much of those bacteria presences, they should not be assumed to remove all traces of the bacteria.
The benefit that deprived countries could reap with this technology is almost limitless. The primary problem as of now is making the technology readily available to the populace of those countries. However, there is a water filter that has been created that comes in the form of a straw that allows the user to drink from a water source, such as a puddle, and the built in filter will take away the iniquities.
Technology such as this is exactly what the water deprived countries need, and as it becomes progressively cheaper to build and manufacture these filters, then perhaps it is possible that a way will be found to mass distribute them among the populace of thirsty nations.
While the technology cannot do much in the way of finding new water sources, what is important is that it can take the sources that are available and have them purified. Granted, this would really only be a quick fix in the long run, any little bit helps.
