Liposuction is an increasingly popular cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgeons that perform the surgery are becoming more and more experienced as the years go on, but there are some risks. How safe is the procedure and what measures are taken to improve safety?

A relatively new surgery, liposuction has steadily grown in popularity since it was first attempted just a few years ago.

The good thing is that enough time has passed that surgeons have been able to discover the safest ways to do the surgery and some things to avoid.

Although anesthesia has always been used to numb the affected area, it has been proven that use of general anesthesia is not usually safe for liposuction, and it certainly isn’t necessary.

Rather than being completely unconscious, patients are now almost always kept completely conscious during the surgery.

The isolated area of the patient’s body from which the fat is removed is carefully cleaned and then numbed with a local anesthetic.

Patients who are numbed with a local anesthetic will feel no pain. They may, however, feel some sensations of pressure and scraping.

It has also been shown that it is dangerous to remove large amounts of fat. The body resists losing its fat stores and does not react well to having too much fat removed at one time. A maximum of ten pounds (some surgeons set the limit at eight) can be removed.

Removing more fat than has been known to lead to death!

Another killer mistake that surgeons should avoid is removing fat from several areas of the body at one time.

Liposuction is safest when the fat is removed only from a small isolated area. Sometimes it can be taken from two areas at once, such as from both hips, but the total area from which the fat is removed must be small.

Of course, it is dangerous to perform any surgery in unsanitary conditions. All of the equipment used must be sterilized, as well as the body of the patient in the effected area. The threat of infection is possibly the greatest threat associated with surgical procedures.

Generally, liposuction is safest for people who are already very healthy.

The body must be able to heal quickly and fight off infection easily. People who are eating well, getting enough sleep and exercise are able to do these things more effectively than those are not.

Also, people who have health conditions or diseases are not good candidates for liposuction for the same reason. It isn’t as safe for them.

Liposuction has become increasingly safe over time because surgeons are considering all of these things as they gain more experience. Even so, there are always risks and it is good to be aware of them.
