Flip flops used to be seen only on beaches, but now you can find people with them even in freezing temperatures. Because of their low price and popularity in fashion, they have become an essential piece to any outfit, formal or casual, but this comes with a price. Experts say that flip flops can be directly correlated with back problems, but is there any truth to this?

Any shoe that doesn’t provide ankle or arch support is said to be bad for your back. This includes any kind of flip flops as well as high heels. People who have to wear high heels to their office job everyday might experience the same back problems as students who wear flip flops to school everyday. Some experts say that they are worse than high heels, and this might be due to the fact that high heels can have more arch support or that insoles can be purchased to help the feet, legs, and back.

While they are considered unhealthy due to lack of ankle and arch support, there are other reasons they are considered bad for your back. Some people argue that people don’t walk how they normally would in flip flops, because of how flip flops are worn. This change in walking can cause added stress to the body. In addition to causing back problems, flip flops can also cause leg pain due to their lack of arch support.

Some come in shapes that seem to cause more support than other kinds of flip flops, but does that make them better for people walking in them? The material flip flops are made of usually cause them to be molded to the wearer’s foot. Any problems you have with your feet, such as hammer toes, low arches or flat feet might be translated into the footwear because of the imprint you leave.

So, how do you keep from experiencing pain, yet still get to wear these fashionable and affordable shoes? Experts say to wear them less often. Most people throw on a pair of flip flops for any occasion because they are easy. If you go to the grocery store or mall, wear a pair of tennis shoes instead. Any time you’re walking more than sitting, you should opt for a more supportive shoe. If you’re moving or hiking, you should definitely wear a pair of tennis shoes to keep from being sore the next day. They can still be worn for dinner dates or to the movies, but they should be saved for times when you aren’t walking a lot.

If you have back problems due to flip flops or other kinds of shoes, explore what other options are on the market. Some brands of shoes make sandals that have ankle support and insoles that provide adequate arch support. While they aren’t exactly flip flops, they can still be just as fashionable and leave you with less pain and chiropractic bills.
