Once upon a time you were afraid to go to the dentist. All that drilling and those shots in the face were too much for many an adult and child. So because of that there are thousands and thousands of adults in the United States today who have not been to a dentist since they were kids. Maybe they went as teenagers or even once or twice as adults. But for many of them there have been years and years of tooth neglect as they refused to go to the dentist.
How many broken or lost crowns are there out there? How many people with fillings of mercury that have seeped into their gums? How many dentists are ringing their hands about all those sunken teeth, chipped teeth and yellowed teeth? Fear was the name of the game when it came to dentistry for a long, long time. Has that changed? Yes it certainly has.
Welcome to the world of sedation dentistry. What is it? It is the various pharmacological options that your dentist has to offer you today so that you are “out” during the procedure and can deal with your dental anxiety. Some patients prefer sedation just for the longer procedures and dentists will recommend it for some patients regardless of the procedure.
There are several different types of sedation available to the dentist who has the anxiety ridden patient. The strongest of these is IV sedation which is deep conscious sedation and the patient is pretty much completely out of it and requires someone to drive them home. Some dentists use a lesser level of sedation known as Enteral sedation also known as orally administered sedation. In this case the dentist administers a pill that relaxes and sometimes causes the patient to fall asleep during the procedure. Sometimes this method of sedation is not predictable by the dentist in respect to the level of sedation.
A third type of sedation a dentist can use is called Inhalation l Conscious Sedation otherwise known as laughing gas. This is a form of sedation that dentists have been using for decades. The patient often falls asleep during the procedure. The negative for a lot of patients with this form of sedation is that the dentist will usually numb the patient’s mouth first with injections to the face.
Some dentists use a combination of Oral (Enteral) conscious sedation and Inhalation conscious sedation. The patient will be in a state of deep relaxation but will still be able to speak and respond to the dentist. This form of sedation is also a traditional form that has been used by dentists for decades.
The real change in the field is the growing number of dentists who use IV sedation along with the growing number of patients who demand it. When you see the commercials these days for sedation dentistry they are mostly talking about IV sedation. The patients requesting this really want to be “out” just like they are in a medical surgery procedure. An advantage for the dentist with this form of sedation is that if the patient does not respond to the level of medication given it can be adjusted simply through the IV.
It is this form of sedation dentistry that is bringing all of us who have been terrified to see a dentist, back into those dental chairs. This is leaving all the dentists smiling brightly.
