Reports say that about forty one million Americans had found tinges of pharmaceutical drugs in water. This news spread as fast as a wild fire.

And people started purchasing water filters for their homes, in order to purify their water and maintain their health. But most of them fail to realize that not all water purifiers have the capacity to eliminate pharmaceutical drugs from the water.

Losing Ground

Reverse osmosis (RO) is losing its ground, as it does not have the capacity to eliminate artificial minerals and chemicals like the pharmaceutical drugs present in water.

Actually reverse osmosis is a process where the water is put under pressure of the permeable membrane. Inanimate minerals and chemicals which are molecularly larger in size than the water molecules cannot pass through the membrane. So, they are filtered here and do not mix up with the water we consume.

But, artificial chemicals like pharmaceutical drugs which are smaller in molecular size easily pass through the membrane along with water. And this water is consumed by us, which is actually not safe, it can cause a lot of health hazard in the future.

Can RO Remove Drugs

Now the question is does reverse osmosis really help in removing pharmaceuticals in water supply? The answer is partially. Simply because some pharmaceuticals particles may be molecularly smaller than water.

In order to make reverse osmosis effective it has to be combined with a carbon filter. Carbon filtration help in the removal of synthetic chemicals like pharmaceuticals whilst leaving in the water, the vital trace minerals that our bodies need.

You might be tempted to believe that there is no harm in consuming pharmaceuticals in small amounts. But the truth is that, consuming these synthetic chemicals and pharmaceuticals could cause health hazards in the long run.

What To Do Now

Do not consume water from the tap directly. Use a good water purifier. Don’t use water filters of cheap quality, just because you are saving money.

If you buy such filters, it will only look like you are saving money for the time being, but you would not be getting the protection you truly deserve and expose your family to potential health problems in the long run.

You want a multi-stage carbon filter, which is capable of removing pharmaceuticals from water as well as synthetic chemicals and some waterborne parasites. This will in turn help keep your body and that of your family, healthy.
