Aside from the health risks, cigarette smoke and cigarette butts are a big source of pollution in the environment, with trillions of butts being thrown on the ground and no telling how much smoke going into the air. The first thing you should do is throw away all of your cigarettes, your lighters, and your ash trays. You need to kick the nicotine out of your life. This is all part of an exercise in will power. You have to tell yourself that smoking is no longer a part of your life and that you will never smoke again. Even if you have smoked within the last five minutes, you should still tell yourself that you are no longer a smoker and that it is not going to happen again. Even if you were to backslide and smoke again, you must keep telling yourself that you no longer smoke. By doing this, you will be taking the first steps to breaking the smoker mentality.

The next important step to take after throwing away your smoking items is to speak with your doctor about any information that he or she may have that could benefit you. You can even ask about whether or not it would be a good idea for you to use nicotine gum or patches to aid you as you try to quit, but keep into consideration that you should not try to use these as crutches. In other words, rely on your own will power, and not gums or patches, to curb your cravings. In some cases the gums and patches can backfire and make a craving stronger, so it is better for you to try to develop the will power to curb them on your own.

If you feel that a craving is too strong, then try to do some other activity in place of the smoking to try and take your mind off of it. You are already on your way to a smoke free life.
