For years claims have been thrown at the tobacco industry concerning health. Studies have shown that smoking leads to cancer, heart disease, and other illness. Even smokeless tobacco has ingredients that cause cancer of the mouth and throat. Tobacco obviously isn’t good for a person’s health, but what exactly is it in tobacco that make is bad for consumers?
Perhaps what makes tobacco so harmful isn’t necessarily the tobacco itself, but the additives that are put into the cigarettes. Naturally, tobacco leaves contain nicotine, the addictive substance that keeps smokers coming back for more. Even though this substance is listed medically as a poison, it continues to be marketed and sold to people all over the world. If you were to inject straight nicotine into your blood stream, chances are you would probably die. The other main harmful element associated with the tobacco itself is tar. Tar is the main element responsible for staining you teeth and fingers as well as causing that smoker’s cough that gives you away. Tar can stain walls and clothing, causing an unsightly discoloration wherever it lingers. Upon inhalation, about 70% of the tar in cigarette smoke is basically dumped into the lungs.
There are a little more than 4000 chemicals associated with tobacco smoke, and at least 43 of those chemicals are known carcinogens. To give you an idea of the kind of chemicals found in cigarettes, here are just a few. As to why some of these chemicals get into cigarettes is still somewhat of a mystery.
-Acetone is found in products such as nail polish remover.
-Traces of arsenic can be found in cigarette smoke. This likely comes from pesticides sprayed on the tobacco plant.
-Ammonia is a product used in products such as bathroom cleaners. It helps the user get more nicotine into their system.
-Toluene is a highly flammable substance that can be found in a variety of industrial products.
-Formaldehyde, which is used to preserve dead bodies, used as embalming fluid, is found in cigarette smoke.
-Carbon monoxide is often described as an odorless, tasteless gas that is poisonous in large amounts. People generally have alarms in their house to alert them of its presence. Also the main component of car exhaust.
This small list is simply meant to give you a peek at the chemicals inside of cigarettes. For some of them, the reason for them being there is unclear. The fact remains, however, that they aren’t healthy for the consumption of humans. If you’re like most smokers and are disgusted when looking at the long list of chemicals, then you might want to think about alternatives such as quitting or turning to e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes basically perform the same function as normal cigarettes without all the harmful additives. Seriously, why is formaldehyde found in tobacco cigarettes?
