Smoking cigarettes may look cool when you’re younger or it may be you showing off as a sign of rebellion, but by the time you’ve been a smoker for several years, you will begin to realize the effects of smoking on your body.

The first thing that you will start to notice after you start smoking is a cough that just won’t go away. It can’t be treated with cough syrup or anything like that; it will not go away until you stop smoking for good.

You may not realize this, but your lungs’ capacity to hold air is decreased by smoking, as well. You may be able to hold your breath for a long time underwater before you start smoking, but afterward, you won’t be able to do that anymore. Running any distance will be difficult, because it will always leave you out of breath and of course, wishing you didn’t smoke.

The amount of energy you have will also decrease. You will wake up in the morning fatigued and not wanting to get out of bed at all; this is because your body requires oxygen to function and as you smoke more and more, your lungs’ ability to absorb oxygen is hampered. Quitting the habit is the only way to get yourself back up to your normal energy level.

Taste and smell. Smoking wrecks both of these senses and until you stop smoking, you won’t be able to fully taste your food. Smell is a large factor in the way we taste things and since smoking affects both taste buds and your sense of smell, the ability to taste food is affected a great deal.

Stained teeth is something else that you have to look forward to if you smoke cigarettes. Your teeth will look horrible and even if you stop smoking, you can’t restore your teeth back to their brilliance without going through expensive whitening treatments at your dentist’s office.

Did you know that smoking can also speed up the aging process? When you smoke, your skin suffers because it is under a constant barrage of chemicals and ash. Smokers develop wrinkles much, much faster than people who do not smoke. Coupled with yellow teeth and the stench of smoke, this can make you one of the least attractive people that you know. Take a good look at yourself in the mirror and think about the consequences that pack of cigarettes a day has brought upon you.
