When a tobacco smoker wants to quit, there are a number of different ways they can go about it. What works for one person, might not work at all for another. You will need to decide if you are going to try and stop smoking cold turkey with help or without help. You can not smoke when you use nicotine patches. You can smoke the first week if you use a non nicotine prescription pill to help you quit, but you have to beware of the side effects from both the pills and the patches. You can continue to smoke if you chew nicotine gum, but many report throat and mouth irritation and not a very big drop in cigarette cravings.
If you want to step down gradually, you can devise your own stop smoking plan just by reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke each day, Some people have the strength to do this on their own and some do not. Success or failure id all up to you anyway no matter what method of quitting you choose. Sometimes a smoker will not even tell their friends or family that they are trying to quit because they do not want to have to admit failure if they do not succeed. If you are really serious about quitting, then you should tell them so they can offer you their support and confidence when you need it the most. It is sometimes easier to achieve a goal if you have others cheering you on.
