Allergies are a reaction of the immune system to something that is mostly harmless to other people. The allergy in a human is caused by an allergen invading the immune system, and the system reacting incorrectly. These allergies will cause symptoms from small annoying things such as runny nose or cough to harmful symptoms like anaphylactic shock.

Remedies

There are many remedies on the market for allergies that parents can give to their children to help with symptoms. Claritin for children is quite popular, and offers a 12 hour relief from the symptoms with little side effects. Benadryl is the next most popular remedy for allergies that children suffer from, and can be found in liquid and pill form for easier dosing. Side effects of this drug include drowsiness that many other remedies do not offer. Weekly allergy shots are available from a physician for children who suffer severe allergies, as determined by an allergen test.

Common Child Food Allergies

Food allergies are among the highest in children, and the most common child food allergy is eggs. Allergies can be hereditary, meaning that a parent can have an allergy to peanuts and therefore a child can also have the allergy to peanuts. There is not normally an inheritance of a particular allergy, but only the possibility of having allergies. Cow’s milk is an allergy that almost 7% of infants have, and almost three-quarters of the formulas available are made from cow’s milk.

Egg allergies are high in infants and very young children- most are allergic to the egg whites. These allergies normally are outgrown by the age of 5. Soy and peanuts make up a small portion of childhood allergens, while wheat and shellfish are some of the highest allergens other than eggs in small children.

Other Common Allergies

Airborne allergies include pollen and dust mites, mold and cockroaches as well as pet allergens from dander. Pet allergens are the most common in children due to the animal licking itself and the saliva drying on the fir. The particle of protein from the saliva then become airborne and then attaches itself to fabrics.

Cats are the number one offender of pet allergies, because their saliva is tiny and they lick more than other animals do when it comes to grooming. Cockroaches are high allergens in the city and can be linked to the higher rates of asthma in inner city children.
