Leg pain is particularly difficult because the source of leg pain can vary from person to person. In this article we won’t address leg pain that results from typical overuse, such as taking a challenging hike or overdoing it at the gym. Rather we will look at three other sources of leg pain that are the result of medical issues.

Vascular Sources of Leg Pain -

The most common vascular source of leg pain is the presence of varicose veins. When the valves of the leg veins weaken or fail, blood flows backwards and pools in lower veins. This causes the vein to swell. If the vein is near the surface you see the development of the typical blue-purple bulges associated with the condition.

Another common source of leg pain is deep vein thrombosis. This is a condition that develops when a clot forms deep within the leg, usually the calf. The clot blocks blood flow generating swelling and pain, but the greatest danger is that the clot will separate and make its way to the lungs or brain.

Both conditions can be assessed visually and through the use of ultrasound scans. Treatment for varicose veins is usually conservative, consisting of elastic stockings, reducing the amount of time on ones feet and raising ones legs whenever possible. If needed, surgery to strip the veins can be performed, and surface varicose veins can be treated with sclerotherapy.

Deep vein thrombosis is treated with a variety of blood thinners such as heparin or warfarin. Most blood clots disappear over time with treatment, while those that don’t or pose a particular health risk can be removed surgically.

Structural Causes of Pain -

There are times when a strain or sprain goes way beyond the normal muscle pain that occurs from excessive use. Tendonitis, bursitis and tears can occur in any muscle. Arthritis, especially at the knee and hip, also causes many people pain. Stress fractures and shin splints are common running injuries and can be incredibly painful as well.

Generally inflammatory illnesses like tendonitis and bursitis are best treated conservatively. Icing, anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroids and rest are the best options for complete recovery.

Muscle tears require more involved treatment. In some cases, such as in a torn or ruptured hamstring or quadriceps tendon, surgery may be advised to repair the tear. Physical therapy will help restore function and range of motion as the tear heals.

Less Common Causes of Leg Pain -

Gout, tumors, sciatica and nerve damage can also lead to leg pain. Gout is easily diagnosed and treated, but the other conditions can be harder to find and treat. If you experience leg pain, unusual swelling or tenderness it is always best to check in with your doctor if the situation lasts for more than a few days.

Some medications cause leg pain and changes in prescriptions can help alleviate the problem. If you suspect that your medication is causing you pain, don’t stop taking the medication, but speak with your doctor as soon as possible. Alternatives can be found for just about every situation.
