No one actually can say for sure what causes headaches. Not in the really technical sense. Reasons abound for what makes that stabbing pain in your skull happen, but what makes that stabbing pain a stabbing pain is more complicated.
There Are Headaches and Then There Are Headaches -
The physiological actions that actually result in the pain are more complicated due to the range and types of headaches. Say you pull a muscle in your leg or stain something in your back. It is usually fairly easy to find the insulted body part and note that it’s swollen, torn, out of place and so forth. This is harder to do with the head.
Outside of very specific causal factors – someone hit you over the head with a bat, stole the secret information and left you in an alley; you slept “wrong” and now your neck is stuck like that, etc. – most headaches seem to be inside the skull. This makes the process of diagnosing headaches without expensive and complicated machinery rather difficult. It also leads to use and even abuse of over the counter or prescription analgesics to counteract the pain.
Do You Really Want To Do That To Your Stomach? Or Your Liver? Or Both? -
Excessive use of acetycilic acid or acetaminophen – or something stronger – is entirely understandable. Headaches can range from mildly annoying to debilitating. Usually once they have moved into the debilitating stage, they are called migraines or cluster headaches and can involve extreme sensitivity to light and/or sound, vomiting or even temporary aphasia – essentially, an inability to make words and thoughts mesh, calling a hand a foot, for example. If a pill or several pills makes a condition that causes one or more of these symptoms stop, there are few who wouldn’t willingly embrace it.
However, there is a range of problems that can come along with taking these medications. Like most things, used sparingly, they are probably ok, but over time, depending on the chemical makeup of the medication, a user can suffer stomach or liver damage, or both. It is also possible to develop a dependence on them.
Pre-emptive Pain -
Dependence on medication is not just for individuals taking narcotics. It can happen with aspirin or acetaminophen as well. The problem arises not just when the body becomes inured to a certain dose and requires more for the same effect, but when the body – or the mind – starts anticipating the medication and therefore induces the pain.
For this reason, among many others, it can be advisable to invest time in traditional methods such as chiropractic treatment and nutritional modification. While practitioners will still not be able to tell a person exactly what reaction is taking place to cause the pain, they can be very helpful in determining what is initiating this reaction.
A chiropractor can provide adjustments to the back and spine and release pinched nerves or muscles that may not be anywhere near the head, but may still be sending pain signals there. A nutrition expert can aid with an examination of your diet to see if certain foods seem to be connected to the pain. This is an especially vital step to take if the headaches are chronic, as that generally indicates a larger systemic cause that is far more likely to get worse over time, than go away on its own.
