Are you looking to start an exercise program but do not know where to begin? Perhaps you are a mother who wants to shed the extra pound of pregnancy. Perhaps you are a teenage boy who has packed on a few too many pounds eating potato chips and playing video games, but now you have met the girl of your dreams. Whatever your situation, there is an end in sight. You just need some basic information.

I know how you feel. Two years ago I was in my early forties I was unemployed and 40 pounds overweight. I had had enough and decided that I was taking my life back. Today I have dropped the weight and have completely turned my life around. How? Let me tell you.

An exercise program should consist of three parts. Weight training, Cardio and nutrition.

Weight training is essential to both burning fat and toning up muscle. Did you know that the more muscle you build the more fat you will burn. So, while running or walking are important to burning calories your efforts will be increased with the more muscle you are carrying. If its been a while since you have been active start out slow. No need to run out and get a gym membership at first. A lot of exercises can be done at home with the weight of your own body.

Running, walking, hiking, swimming, doing the stairmaster, these are all good exercises. The longer you go the more fat you will burn. Again, no need to start by training for a marathon. Start out slow. Go for a walk around the block with your spouse or dog. Take the stairs rather than the elevator. Park far away in the parking lot so that you are forced to walk those extra few yards.

You can do all the exercise in the world and it will not matter if you are eating poorly. Prepackaged processed foods are designed for two things, to have a long shelf life and make people fat. There is no need to go on a diet. Simply change your eating habits. Eat fresh foods like vegetables and fruit. Eat fish and chicken and lean beef. Diets are designed to fail because they are meant to be temporary. If you fundamentally change your eating habits you will never have to go on a diet again.

Now, here is the secret. Weight lifting and cardio and nutrition are all essential. But, which excercises? How much cardio? Which foods are the best? I actually discovered that by doing the right type of cardio and weight lifting exercises I can do fewer but see more results. You can even lose weight if you eat more than three meals a day.

  1. Good article!

Is cardio really necessary though? Don’t get me wrong I’m not “anti-cardio”, just “anti-tradional cardio.” Most people would consider cardio to be pumping away mindlessly on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike, or coasting on an elliptical machine, while watching the TV screen. This is what I call “traditional cardio”. It’s no wonder the majority of people get bored with their workouts and give up after a couple months without seeing results.

People need to workout with more intensity while still conditioning the heart.
