The Baby Boomer generation grew up afraid to go to the dentist but as usual they have brought another industry to the forefront as they age. That industry is cosmetic dentistry. Not that cosmetic dentists have not always been around, they have. Cosmetic dentists have been the last resort if you were in an accident and broke your teeth or if you were a wealthy star and had to have perfect teeth.
Not anymore. Just turn on the television and listen for the commercials advertising how to improve your smile. These days if you have discolored teeth from smoking or coffee or even leaking silver or mercury filling. Or maybe you’ve had crooked teeth all your life and now you want to finally do something about it. Will you go to your regular dentist? Not likely. These days you will go to the cosmetic dentist.
It used to be that the regular dentists did all the fillings and crowns but with the advent of new technologies and new materials, these things have become the purview of the cosmetic dentist. So what are these new procedures and technologies? Materials? The biggest thing in dentistry these days is porcelain. Yes dentists are still using composite resins and ceramics, but even fillings are being done in porcelain these days. More and more dentists are using porcelain overlays and inlays and porcelain crowns.
But the biggest winner in this Baby Boom generation rush to get the perfect smile the winner is the cosmetic dentists with the porcelain veneers. Veneers have become the big hit in the world of cosmetic dentistry. More and more adults are eager to improve their smile by straighten crooked teeth, whitening dull teeth, filling in the gaps between their teeth, or just replacing old crowns. These baby boomers are turning to the cosmetic dentist with a request for veneers and the industry is more than happy to grant that request.
It is not necessary to use veneers to solve all those previously mentioned issues. Any dentist can use Invisalign aligners to straighten crooked teeth. Any dentist can use traditional bleaching to whiten teeth. Crowns have been used to fill in gaps and old crowns can be replaced with new porcelain ones. However the baby boomers are not asking their regular dentists to do these procedures. They are turning to cosmetic dentists to apply either porcelain veneers or Lumineers.
Most dentists prefer porcelain veneers for all of those procedures except the gap in between the teeth. Even though porcelain veneers are more expensive than either composite veneers or Lumineers they are the dentist’s choice because they are so durable while still being flexible. Lumineers, though not demanding as much preparation as porcelain veneers, are really only effective for someone with gaps in between their teeth. Dentists have stated that Lumineers can cause a “toothy” smile or bulky teeth since they are not shaped as much and no part of the tooth is destroyed during preparation.
So as the baby boomers continue to age and choose to keep their smile as brilliant and perfect as possible for as long as possible, the art of cosmetic dentistry will also continue to grow. However it is the cosmetic dentist who is smiling all the way to the bank.
