Whenever anyone finds themselves addicted to something, the question is why? What is it that causes people to become dependent on one or more particular things? Some people only get addicted to smoking and never drink an alcoholic beverage. Some people drink and smoke. Some people drink and never smoke. Some use other types of drugs. Some people are so addicted to caffeine that they have to have a cup of coffee with them at all times of the day and some people want food around them always. Now, just because you like something a lot does not necessarily mean you are addicted, but sometimes it does.

What a person that finds themselves using something as a crutch all day everyday needs to find out is what their reason is. Most therapists say that when a person is addicted to or dependent on something like cigarettes, eating, alcohol or other drugs is because they could be hiding something they do not want to deal with. It could be that they have past problems that are still affecting them or they could have current issues that they are dealing with using their crutch.

This is why when people become addicted to things, sometimes they need to seek professional help in order to pin point exactly what it is that is keeping them chained to their addiction. While it is true in the case of being addicted to smoking, the nicotine is addictive, but so is the habit itself of putting something in your mouth and holding it in your hand. Even when the nicotine is out of the system, the craving to hold a cigarette and inhale the smoke is still there. This is true with other things too. An intravenous drug user can get the drugs out of their system, but the desire to stick that needle in their arm is still there. These are psychological dependencies.

There is no one specific reason that causes people to become dependent or addicted to things or substances. It can be a different event or emotion for everyone. Sometimes seeing a professional to help you figure out what you might can do to break the cycle of addiction is the best coarse of action. When you are addicted to something and desperately want to break away from it, you need to use every option available to get a good start and keep up your strength. A professional can usually help in some way. Even something as common as smoking can have an underlying root cause and it is up to you to find out what it is if you want to free yourself from it.
