Anxiety Can Cause Dramatic Increase In Sexual Feelings

When a person is anxious, the brain is trying to cope with disturbed and confused messages from all around the body, some of the mind’s thought processes can become distorted or exaggerated.

Sexual thoughts and emotions are typically strong even when in good health. These are obviously very important impulses as as they are what drive the attraction mechanism when we meet people to whom we are attracted and they also create the sexual attraction we feel for a person. Without these impulses we would have no sexual motivation to procreate!

However, in times of high anxiety these emotions can become exaggerated and sometimes distorted into feeling or thoughts which we would under normal circumstances find disturbing or unacceptable. Some people find themselves having thoughts of a perverse or homosexual nature. If this has happened to you, don’t give these thoughts any credit. They certainly do not mean you are going mad, changing sexuality or becoming bisexual. These thoughts and feelings are simply your mind challenging your core beliefs about yourself. What you need to understand is that your anxiety is trying to scare you at whatever cost, and this is manifested in not just unpleasant physical, but also mental symptoms.

So, do not take any notice of these thoughts. Like every symptom of anxiety, don’t give them any credit and they will go away in time as your anxiety subsides. I experienced many crazy thoughts prior to my recovery and at first they scared me quite a bit. But once I understood what anxiety is, that it is just a harmless inappropriate response that can be corrected by changing my lifestyle, my anxiety immediately began to subside because I didn’t let it scare me. Do not let your anxiety scare you otherwise you will perpetuate it.

A lot of my clients always seem shocked to find out that anxiety is totally harmless, but is is and that’s the fact. Anxiety is not a disease or illness. It’s not even a disorder. It’s a behavioural condition which can be eliminated by practising new behaviour. This new behviour is absolutely the only way to take away your anxiety. Unfortunately, you cannot ‘think’ yourself out of anxiety. You must act. But the good news is that practising new behaviour is simple. Just ignore your anxiety and do the things that you would normally enjoy. I know it is hard. You may feel absolutely horrific and that may be stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, but trust me, keep at it and your anxiety will subside. Once your body realises that it is much easier to be non-anxious than anxious, this will expidite your recovery. Good luck!

  1. I enjoyed this article, but strongly disagree with the final paragraph:

    “Just ignore your anxiety and do the things that you would normally enjoy. I know it is hard. You may feel absolutely horrific and that may be stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, but trust me, keep at it and your anxiety will subside.”

    If someone is able to do this then they are not suffering with anxiety. It is quite irresponsible to suggest that people essentially grin and bear it until it passes when many people have done this for years and will be unable to move on with their lives without counselling, CBT, or SSRI medication.
