Many people like to use alternative health practices like a colon cleanse as part of their maintenance routine. Some users feel that these types of health practices improve how they feel. Some medical professionals do not think it is an effective practice. Whether or not to use it depends on what the user wants or expects to receive from it.

The idea that the colon holds on to unwanted materials like fecal matter or other toxic materials stems from the time of the ancient Egyptians. Their medical knowledge led them to believe that other materials like pus from the other parts of the body ended up in the colon and many times became trapped there. The Greeks also adopted this idea about medicine and it was passed down at different times, becoming a very popular idea again in Victorian times. Shortly after the turn of the century, the idea was examined more closely by the medical community and rejected. It has remained in some alternative health literature as a useful technique.

This type of cleansing can be accomplished several ways. One is to use mechanical means to flush liquid of some kind through the colon. Some alternative health spas have offered this type of therapy for over a century and many prominent people such as Hollywood stars were regular patrons. There are still private spas and practitioners who offer this type of service.

Another type of cleanse is one that is ingested. This type uses fiber and/or various nutritional ingredients to help flush the body of unwanted materials. It may be provided as a type of tea or beverage, capsules, pills or powders. There may be one step or several. Users say these cleanses flush out parasites, toxic buildup, promote regular bowl movements and help tone and strengthen intestinal health in general.

These types of deep cleaning routines have their place in traditional medicine for some reasons. When someone undergoes a colonoscopy that is a medical procedure to examine the colon for illness or injury, they must use products to remove all fecal material prior to the procedure. While not called a cleanse, these are strong laxative type products that have a similar effect.

One downside to using these types of products on a regular basis is that it may increase a tendency toward constipation. Should people decide they want to use them, they need to not come to rely on them regularly as a method to treat constipation as they can also sometimes remove electrolytes from the body causing an imbalance. Using a colon cleanse should be something not used on a regular basis.
