One of the main types of acne is called Acne Vulgaris. This is a skin condition that is caused by the pores of the skin getting clogged with skin cells that are dead along with oil and bacteria. This is most often seen with teenagers but can happen at any age. Milder cases of this type of acne results in a few red spot or pimples but more severe cases of it can actually affect a person’s whole body and can end up in a skin infection and even scarring. Even if the acne is mild, it still should be supervised by a doctor.

When acne occurs in adults more adult women seem to be more prone to getting it than men, especially when they are still going through their menstrual cycles. Generally they will develop acne just before their menstrual cycle. No matter what the age however, acne is manifested in at least 85% of the entire population at one time or another and everyone will develop at least one pimple in a lifetime.

If a person has a mild case of acne there probably will not be any long term problems to deal with. But, those that may have more severe bouts of it will more than likely have bigger issues to deal with because of it. Really bad cases can sometimes get in the way of social relations and can have a negative affect in a person and their confidence as well as their self-esteem.

You know that you have acne vulgaris when you start noticing things like pustules, papules and or nodules that are either on the skin our just beneath the skin. There are also comedones better known as whiteheads. These bumps will usually appear on the face, the neck, the chest and even on the back. Sometimes they can even be found on the upper arms as well as the shoulders. The larger sized pimples that are medically referred to as cystic lesions can not only be unsightly but very painful and can end up scarring the body. If a person has repeated cases of acne, especially if they are not treated in a proper manner can lead to permanent scars and even pits on the skin.

This type of acne as said before is caused by the pores of the skin getting clogged with oil and skin cells that are dead. This then allows for the bacteria to get into the skin as well and this will lead to swelling of the infected area, pus and redness. It’s the infection that leads to the inflammation of the skin. The increase of certain hormones during puberty is also another reason for the acne. The reason for this is because the skin becomes a lot oilier during this time and can result in severe cases of acne vulgaris. One of the most common misconceptions is that this kind of acne is caused by diet. This is not true. The only thing that certain diets might do is make the acne worse.

It is true that in some instances that acne could be genetic. Especially for those that have bad cases of it and they have a parent or some other close relative that had the same kind of skin problems. There are some medicines that can be causes for severe cases such as steroids, lithium as well as antiepliletic medication. Different medical conditions might also be a cause such as polycystic ovary syndrome and congenital adrenal hyperplasia are a couple of examples. The reason for this is that both of these will increase their androgen levels.

Trying to prevent this kind of acne is extremely difficult and it usually means trying to keep the skin as clean as possible and that can be a pretty hard thing to do. You also can try and figure out which foods or skin care products seem to worsen the acne. Another thing that can be done is trying to avoid scratching or rubbing the affected areas. If a person has mild acne they can find effective treatments over the counter. Some of the best are ones that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide solutions. Those with more severe cases will fair better with topical or oral prescriptions. It will all depend upon the person, their tolerance and the severity of their acne.
